~Malt Extracts~

Liquid and Dried Malt Extract

The first of 4 major ingredients in your batch will be malt, Malt, (malted Barley, Wheat etc.) provides the fermentable material for your batch, Malt also contributes flavor and color to the finished beer. Malt can be bought in its natural grain form, malt syrup, or spray dried (DME) malt. Our selections include high quality malts from a number of countries around the globe.  The brands that we carry have consistently proven to be of superior quality and present a good value to the consumer

Tips & Techniques from Old West

Briess Dried Malt Extract is available in 1, 3, 6 and 50 lb bags. DME is used the same as liquid malt. You will however get about 10% more yield pound for pound because there is no water weight. Many of our Customers will use one three pound bag of DME along with a 3.3 or 4.0 kit of liquid malt (kit). The batch will come out better without the addition of corn sugar. We feel it is well worth the extra money to brew with all malt.

Tips & Techniques from Old West

What is a kit? The common definition is a can of extract which has already been hopped and has the yeast included under the cap.  Kits need more fermentables (malt, brewers sugar, honey etc) to produce a full five gallons.

Use the plain extracts to add to your hopped kits as a "booster" One 3.3lb can of plain extract added to a 4lb kit should produce a starting gravity of 1.050 or about 5% alcohol. You can also use plain extract to build your own brew from scratch by adding your own bittering, flavoring and finishing hops.
